UBC Lifespan Sci-Fi Movie Night
Last night, we hosted another UBC Movie Night social, viewing Everything Everywhere All At Once, then proceeding to discuss the movie in terms of Lifespan. We discussed the use of AI and transhumanism, and the possibilities of being able to recreate a world where people could live forever through their minds. Not to the extreme of multiverses, but through the idea of splitting your mind in such a way that one part could continue on as another part ages and decays. Would we want such a world? It was an interesting concept to think about.
We had a turnout of 8 people. We enjoyed a dinner and attendees provided commentary throughout the movie as well. It was a great night of fun.
The group organised ourselves into a heated discussion where questions rolled off one another. Topics of our discussion included bridging the gap between philosophy and science, immortalism, anti-aging and resurrection through the mind. We imagined what our world would look like if we could split our minds as such, like they did in the movie, essentially living forever unless they got killed/injured purposefully.
For more events like this, UBC students can purchase a $10 membership. Food and networking opportunities will be provided, and students will receive free access to all our events, including our research seminar. You can also use our grip strength measuring machine (dynanometer).
We hope to host more future events at UBC so that we can educate UBC students about longevity and lifespan in a non-biased and scientific way. We want to remove the stigma associated with lifespan so that we can show students how to and why improving their health and well-being is beneficial for their lifespan in the long-term. Longevity isn't just about extending life, it's about having a healthy lifespan. It's about making conscious choices starting now to enrich our lives in a fulfilling way.
