In Time

Last movie night, we watched the movie In Time. With a turnout of 6 people, we followed the movie with pizza and a discussion of the movie in terms of Lifespan and longevity. Specifically, we discussed the barriers to longevity research and preventative medicine, as well as cryonics, that is imposed upon people who lack knowledge or money for such technologies.

In this movie, an individual's lifespan is their form of currency. The area is divided into several "Time Zones" where the rich are practically immortal, and the poor survive for merely 24 hours. This speaks a lot about our society in general. Through more research, aging technologies would be provided to people from higher socioeconomic backgrounds, causing disparities to people who lack such resources. If we lived in such a world where lifespan was currency, how could we allow for more equitable measures to be taken? This was the main conversation of our discussion.

We also discussed scientific methods that could be used to allow for a way in which lifespan could be converted to currency. The general consensus was that this is not possible. However, it did lead to an interesting conversation about the finiteness of human life. Everything in this universe is finite, so is an infinite human life possible?
